Q&A With Aymee & Molly
Casaza: How did you get your start?
Light and Dwell: Light and Dwell became official in the fall of 2015. Aymee approached Molly about going into business together, and we jumped in headfirst. The first year, we said yes to everything and anything that came our way, mostly doing design boards and hourly consultations. We had a dream of doing full homes, but it took us a few years to establish ourselves, build a portfolio, and develop the systems to make that possible. Now we offer virtual design services, full-service design, and we have an active blog and social media.
C: How would you describe your style?
L&D: Organic, Classic, European meets Pacific Northwest
C: Where do you get new ideas and inspiration?
Molly: Traveling, outdoors, and in particular, floral arrangements. I used to do florals, and arrangements are a great way to gather color combinations and textures.
C: Favorite room in the house?
Aymee: Pantry, because it’s super functional and it can be made really beautiful.
Molly: Kitchen, because it’s the heart of the home!
C: Design rule you don't subscribe to?
L&D: What rules? We don’t have design rules!
C: Recent project that inspired you?
L&D: Our "Brooklane Project”! It was a stretch in our design style because the client is really traditional and we were able to blend her style and ours really well.
C: Favorite texture/pattern/color?
L&D: We can’t get enough of ceramics. Whether it’s a ceramic vase, lamp, bowl, they always look slightly different and add so much character and texture to a space. Plus, they’re timeless! We prefer ceramics in neutrals.
C: What is “good design” to you?
L&D: Innovative, thoughtful, curated design.
C: Pack your bag! You're moving into a famous home. Whose is it?
Aymee: Jennifer Aniston! Her home is beautiful and lived in.
Molly: Ellen DeGeneres! Her Los Angeles Villa is so inspiring and beautiful.
C: What’s your rule when entertaining?
Aymee: The more the merrier!
Molly: Always have a charcuterie board.
C: Best advice for DIYers?
L&D: Invest in good finishes! If you’re doing it yourself, invest in good lighting, plumbing, and hardware. It makes SUCH a difference!
C: Best advice for those hiring a pro?
L&D: Understand the deliverables, ask questions about their systems and processes. Make sure that you are being heard by the designer(s), and that there’s a good vibe right off the bat. Trust your gut!
C: What is one design trend you are most excited about this season?
L&D: Fluted details!
C: How do you take your coffee?
Aymee: Decaf Au Lait
Molly: Breve Au Lait
