Q&A With Jessica Davis

Casaza: How did you get your start?
Jessica Davis: It’s kind of odd, actually. After design school and an internship experience, I had doubts as to whether I wanted to continue this career path, so I didn’t for a while. I ended up selling telecommunications devices at one point and joined a business networking group. I met another interior designer in the group who convinced me to follow my dreams, so I founded JL Design in 2005, and the rest is history.

C: How would you describe your style?
JD: My personal style is funky and fun! I love the unexpected. I thrive on playing up color and scale. However, I pride myself on creating spaces that reflect a client's own personal taste and style, while telling their unique story... Not mine... Well, maybe mine a little.

C: Where do you get new ideas and inspiration?
JD: Commercial design and travel. I love to visit the next hot hotel or restaurant to see what is happening on the east and west coast. I am a total east coast brat though.

C: Favorite room in the house?
JD: I love the master bedroom. It’s where you sleep, dream, relax, and feel safe and quiet. It’s where the day ends and a new one begins. I love that.

C: Recent project that inspired you?
JD: I worked with a client for over a year on a total home renovation. It was their first project of this size and we had to navigate some tough terrain. I am working with them now on furnishings, and I'm inspired by how they have handled the process with grace and how our trust and respect for each other has grown, as it should, over time. It is a fabulous project, but the people make it that much more enjoyable!

C: Favorite texture/pattern/color?
JD: Today I am feeling like a lot of jewel tones. I love the rich vibrant depth that these palettes offer. I think the warmth reminds me that it will be getting cold soon.

C: What is “good design” to you?
JD: Good design is thoughtful and intentional. You see the intent of the space and its success is undeniable.

C: Pack your bag! You're moving into a famous home. Whose is it?
JD: Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Everything about his house is epic! I mean... His chair talks... That's awesome.

C: What’s your rule when entertaining?
JD: Have enough booze.

C: Best advice for DIYers?
JD: Paint is easy.

C: Best advice for those hiring a pro?
JD: Understand the qualifications and how those apply to your needs. More importantly, make sure you like the designer you are talking with. This should be a lasting relationship and is someone who is creating the space in which you will laugh and cry. This should not be taken lightly.

C: What is one design trend are you most excited about this season?
JD: I am most excited about the come back of COLOR! We have all enjoyed the harmonious monochromatic schemes and white-on-white for much too long. It’s time to brighten things up a bit.

C: How do you take your coffee?
JD: Cream and sugar, please!
