Q&A With Tiffany Brooks

Casaza: How did you get your start?
Tiffany Brooks: Believe it or not, I got into interior design on a bet. I was an assistant property manager at a luxury apartment complex and I designed one of the models on the property that I worked at. It was entered for an award. My boss bet me that if I win, I had to pursue interior design as a career. He believed in my talent. Well, we won the award for the best two bedroom model. I later started my business on the side, then I won HGTV Star in 2013 and the rest is history.

C: How would you describe your style?
TB: Soulful Contemporary. Contemporary lines, with bursts of color. Then I love to top it off with great vintage finds that have or look like they have a story, to give the space a touch of soul.

C: Where do you get new ideas and inspiration?
TB: Pinterest, fashion magazines and old movies, anything from the '50’s to the '80’s.

C: Favorite room in the house? Why?
TB: My son’s room because it's the most updated room. The rest of our home is extremely dated, believe it or not.

C: Design rule you don't subscribe to?
TB: I don’t like when people concede to a standard kitchen. I like to think outside the box when it comes to kitchens. That includes color, how cabinets are laid out, and the use of solid surfaces.

C: Recent project that inspired you?
TB: The HGTV Smart Home 2018. It was something that was out of my element and I didn’t think I could do it because I lean on the contemporary side. This home was a stylish farmhouse. It was a more modern take on country for me.

C: Favorite pattern?
TB: I love stripes. They go with anything, any era, any style. Never met a stripe that I couldn’t put in a room.

C: What is “good design” to you?
TB: When a space feels approachable, like you can actually live in it. When people just want to sit down in the space. You can see touches of the family.

C: Pack your bag! You're moving into a famous home. Whose is it?
TB: Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s home. He’s so edgy and innovative. I just want to sit there and be inspired.

C: What’s your rule when entertaining?
TB: Always make sure the drinks are topped off. Everyone loosens up that way.

C: Best advice for DIYers?
TB: Research, research, research! Don’t expect to get it right the first time.

C: Best advice for those hiring a pro?
TB: Research, research, research! It's a relationship that will last at the minimum, six months. You are going to get to know each other.

C: What is one design trend are you most excited about this season?
TB: I love that people are being more comfortable with the different takes on more feminine colors. I love seeing different hues of pinks and violets, especially in kitchens and baths.

C: How do you take your coffee?
TB: Black, mixed in with my protein shake in the morning.
